Winning the Games!

Congratulations to England who emerged triumphant in the 2024 Women's Six Nations!

I am proud of my country!

In the Bible, there are several passages that touch upon the concept of winning. Let’s explore some of them:

1 Corinthians 9:24-26:

"Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air.":

The apostle Paul illustrates spiritual realities in this text by using analogies from athletics. He compares living a Christian life to a boxing fight or a sprint. Just as athletes put in a lot of training and compete for a fleeting reward (like a wreath), believers ought to lead disciplined lives. The ultimate aim is eternal life with God—not a transitory but an imperishable prize. The focus is on exercising self-control and intentionality while running the course of faith diligently.

Philippians 4:13:

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me." This passage by the apostle Paul is a strong proclamation. He says that believers can do anything because of Christ. It's about depending on the strength that comes from a relationship with Jesus, not about your own strength or ability. Our reliance on Christ gives us the ability to endure and triumph over obstacles, tribulations, and victories.

1 John 5:4-5:

"For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?"John highlights that believers—those born of God—have dominion over the world. We are able to triumph over the difficulties, temptations, and hardships we face because of our faith in Jesus. Success in this life is not determined by financial wealth or worldly prosperity, but rather by living in accordance with God's will and having faith in Jesus as the Son of God.

Recall that these lines refer to more profound spiritual principles rather than winning contests or games on earth. Biblical victory is having faith, enduring hardship, and keeping an eye toward everlasting benefits.
