When a man questioned Jesus, "Who is my neighbour?" one day as he was speaking to the multitude, Jesus responded by telling him this tale.
A Jewish guy once travelled from Jerusalem to his hometown of Jericho. The route wound through the hills and was rocky.
Abruptly, a large gang of bandits leaped out of their hiding spot.
They tore off his clothes and stole all he owned. So that he wouldn't pursue them, they robbed him and then left him laying, injured, by the side of the road.
A priest was strolling along the same road a little while later. The wounded guy cried out for assistance to the priest. The clergyman was terrified. He ignored the injured man's cry for assistance as he hurried passed on the road, believing the bandits might still be in the area.
Later on, the same road was used by an aide to a priest. The wounded guy shouted out to him once again. To see if he recognised the injured man, he cast a glance down at him. He hurried off down the road, nevertheless, not knowing the man.
A third man passed by a short while later. He was from the nearby country of Samaria.
The Jewish people's opponents were the Samaritans. They'd never been fond of one another.
He felt sad for the Jewish man as soon as he spotted him laying by the side of the road. Beside the wounded man, he bent down, bandaged his wounds, and offered him some water. Subsequently, he assisted the wounded man in mounting his donkey and transported him to the closest town. He even covered the man's lodging expenses while he was recovering at an inn.
"Who was the loving neighbour in the story?" Jesus asked the crowd after sharing this parable.
"It was the Good Samaritan," said the individual posing the inquiry.
"Go and do the same," said Jesus.
