Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, GA on January 15, 1929. He skipped two grades in High School because he was so smart.

Martin was encouraged to enter the ministry by his father, a preacher. He had an older sister and a younger brother. He wed Coretta Scott in 1953. Later on, Yolanda, Martin, Dexter, and Bernice would be their four children.

Leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott was Martin Luther King Jr.'s first significant civil rights initiative. Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man was the catalyst for this. After being detained, she was kept overnight in jail. Martin thus assisted in planning a boycott of Montgomery's public transit system. More than a year passed during the boycott. At times, it was really tense. Martin's home was bombed and he was taken into custody. But in the end, Martin won, and segregation on the Montgomery buses ended.

Martin Luther King Jr. assisted in planning the historic "March on Washington" in 1963. This march was attended by about 250,000 individuals in an attempt to highlight the significance of civil rights laws. The march aimed to achieve a number of goals, including as the abolition of racial segregation in public schools, safeguarding citizens from police brutality, and passing legislation to outlaw discriminatory hiring practices.

Martin delivered his "I Have a Dream" address during this march. One of the most well-known speeches in history is now this one. The March on Washington proved to be a huge triumph. 1964 saw the passing of the Civil Rights Act, one year later.

On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed in Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray shot him while he was standing on his hotel balcony.
