Jerusalem Day!

Praying for peace.

Pray for safety and security from violence and strife in Jerusalem against outside attackers.

Ask for harmony and togetherness among all Jerusalemites, irrespective of their creed or country of origin.

Family Wholeness: Offer your prayers for the health and happiness of city families.

Economic and Political Prosperity: Seek prosperity and stability for Jerusalem’s economy, religious institutions, and political climate.

Recall that the core of worship is crucial: delight in the chance to seek God's presence in the Lord's temple. Here's another little prayer you can use:

"Loving Father, we ask that peace return to Jerusalem in the name of Jesus. We rely on Your Promise that prosperity awaits everyone who loves this city. We declare together that wealth shall dwell in Jerusalem's palaces and that peace shall reside within her walls. Jerusalem, for the benefit of our loved ones and friends, peace be upon you."

How to celebrate it?

Jerusalem Day (Hebrew: יום ירושלים, Yom Yerushaláyim) is an Israeli national holiday that commemorates the “reunification” of East Jerusalem (including the Old City) with West Jerusalem following the Six-Day War of 1967. Here are some ways to celebrate:

Jerusalem Day is celebrated with great fanfare with the flag-flying procession (Dance of Flags), thousands of people carrying Israeli flags as they march from the city centre to the Western Wall. It's a striking expression of pride and solidarity.

Make a personal trip to Jerusalem by visiting it. Discover its historical sites, such as the Old City, the Western Wall, and other important locations. Consider the rich historical and cultural legacy of the city.

Attend Ceremonies and Memorial Services: To honour those who lost their lives during the Six-Day War, Israel holds memorial services and state ceremonies. Take part in these activities to honour those who gave their lives to bring Jerusalem back together.

Recall that the 28th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar is the day on which Jerusalem Day is observed every year. According to the Gregorian calendar, it falls on June 4th (sunset) to June 5th (nightfall) in 2024.

Why it is important and special for people from Judaism, Christianity and Islam?

Judaism:

For Jews, Jerusalem is essential to their identity and faith. Jews can pray there and feel a connection to their past thanks to the Western Wall, a relic from the Second Temple.

The holiest spot in Judaism is thought to be the Temple Mount, where the First and Second Temples are said to have stood.

The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), which contains numerous references to Jerusalem, greatly influenced Jewish spirituality and customs.

Christianity:

Jerusalem holds special significance for Christians being the location of numerous incidents in Jesus Christ's life.

The Old City's Church of the Holy Sepulchre is thought to be the location of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.

The ascension of Jesus into heaven is connected to the Mount of Olives.

Jerusalem is a place where pilgrims go to connect with biblical history and to grow in their faith.

Islam:

One of the most sacred places in Islam is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is situated atop the Temple Mount. It is thought that the Prophet Muhammad passed through that location on the Night Journey.

After Mecca and Medina, Jerusalem is regarded as the third-holiest city in Islam.

Situated atop the Temple Mount, the recognisable golden-domed edifice known as the Dome of the Rock is extremely sacred to Muslims.

Peace and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians

Promoting peace and coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem is a complex challenge, but here are some steps that could contribute to a more harmonious future:

Encourage leaders, individuals, and communities to have open lines of communication through dialogue. Conversations can promote empathy, comprehension, and common objectives.

Establish forums for cooperative conversations where all parties can voice their opinions and look for areas of agreement.

Create collaborative cultural and educational initiatives that honour Jerusalem's lengthy past. Events like festivals, art exhibits, and museums help foster appreciation and respect for one another.

Create common areas in the community where individuals from various backgrounds can engage in natural interactions.

Encourage economic partnerships and trade between Israeli and Palestinian businesses. Joint ventures can create jobs and improve livelihoods.

Invest in infrastructure projects that benefit both communities, such as transportation and water resources.

Promote respect for each other’s religious sites. Ensure freedom of worship for all, regardless of faith.

Educate young people about the significance of different religious sites and their shared heritage.

Uphold human rights for all residents of Jerusalem, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

Address housing, land, and property rights issues fairly.

Remember that peace is a collective effort, and small steps can lead to significant change.

Have I been to Jerusalem?

No, but I'm planning. I don't know when. Maybe when the current war end.
