Going through with God - Mat 5:1-12

A crucial portion of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount is found in Matthew 5:1–12, sometimes known as the Beatitudes. This verse lists the dispositions and qualities that God blesses. The King James Version (KJV) of the Bible gives the following synopsis of each beatitude:

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

This means recognising our spiritual needs and dependence on God.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Mourning refers to sorrow over sin and suffering, with the promise of God’s comfort.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Meekness involves humility and gentleness, not weakness, and it leads to inheriting God’s promises.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

This speaks to a deep desire for justice and moral integrity, which God will satisfy.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Showing compassion and forgiveness to others results in receiving the same from God.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Purity in heart means having sincere intentions and a clean conscience, leading to a closer relationship with God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Those who promote peace and reconciliation reflect God’s nature and are recognized as His children.

Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Enduring persecution for doing what is right brings the reward of God’s kingdom.

Blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Facing false accusations and hostility for following Jesus is a cause for rejoicing, as it aligns believers with the prophets and promises great reward in heaven.

These beatitudes emphasise the virtues of God's kingdom, stressing the benefits of living in accordance with God's will and inward development.
