Close enough to hear him (1 John 1:3-4, Psalms 51:9-12)

1 John 1:3-4 (KJV)

Verse 3: “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

Verse 4: “And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.”

Explanation:

Verse 3: The apostle John emphasizes the importance of sharing the message of Jesus Christ. He speaks of the apostles' firsthand experiences (“that which we have seen and heard”), and their purpose in sharing these experiences is to invite others into fellowship with them, which is ultimately fellowship with God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Psalms 51:9-12 (KJV)

Verse 9: “Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.”

Verse 10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

Verse 11: “Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy spirit from me.”

Verse 12: “Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

Verse 4: John writes these things to bring complete joy to the believers.

Explanation:

Verse 9: David is pleading with God to turn away from his sins and to erase his wrongdoings. This is a cry for forgiveness and cleansing.

Verse 10: David asks God to create a pure heart within him and to renew his spirit. This signifies a desire for inner transformation and spiritual renewal.

Verse 11: David fears being cast away from God’s presence and losing the Holy Spirit. He is asking for continued closeness and the sustaining presence of God’s Spirit.

Verse 12: David seeks the restoration of the joy that comes from God’s salvation and asks for a willing spirit to sustain him.

Together, these passages emphasize the importance of fellowship with God, the joy that comes from it, and the need for continual renewal and closeness to God. They reflect a deep desire to be “close enough to hear Him,” to experience His presence, and to live in a state of spiritual renewal and joy.
