Being blessed, Staying Blessed and Keeping His Path (Psalm 119:1-12)

Verse 1: “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.”

This verse highlights the blessing of living a life of integrity and purity. “Undefiled” refers to being blameless or without moral blemish. Walking in the “law of the LORD” means living according to God’s commandments and teachings.


Verse 2: “Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.”

Those who diligently follow God’s testimonies (His decrees and commandments) and seek Him with complete sincerity and devotion are blessed. This verse emphasizes wholehearted commitment to God.


Verse 3: “They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.”

Those who follow God’s ways strive to avoid sin and wrongdoing. Walking in God’s ways means living by His will and commandments.


Verse 4: “Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.”

God commands His followers to observe His precepts (rules or principles) with diligence and care. This verse underscores the importance of being attentive and committed to God’s instructions.


Verse 5: “O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!”

The psalmist expresses a deep desire for his life to be aligned with God’s statutes (laws). This verse reflects a longing for divine guidance and the strength to follow God’s commands.


Verse 6: “Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.”

By respecting and adhering to all of God’s commandments, the psalmist believes he will live without shame. This verse suggests that obedience to God brings honor and integrity.


Verse 7: “I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.”

The psalmist commits to praising God with a sincere and upright heart, especially as he learns and understands God’s righteous judgments (decisions and laws).


Verse 8: “I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.”

The psalmist pledges to keep God’s statutes and pleads for God’s continual presence and support, expressing a fear of being abandoned by God.


Verse 9: “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.”

This verse poses a question about how a young person can maintain a pure life. The answer is by adhering to God’s word, which provides guidance and moral direction.


Verse 10: “With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.”

The psalmist declares his wholehearted pursuit of God and prays for steadfastness in following God’s commandments, seeking divine help to avoid straying.


Verse 11: “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

By internalising God’s word, the psalmist aims to guard against sin. This verse highlights the importance of knowing and cherishing God’s teachings to live a righteous life.


Verse 12: “Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.”

The psalmist praises God and asks for instruction in His statutes, showing a desire for continual learning and growth in understanding God’s laws.


Psalm 119:1–12, in summary, highlights the benefits of living a life in accordance with God's commands, the significance of complete dedication, and the yearning for heavenly guidance and instruction. It inspires believers to follow God's word in order to pursue chastity, morality, and a close relationship with Him.
