World Jellyfish Day!

Today it is World Jellyfish Day! Jellyfish is part of God's creation and just like other animals, we need to take care of it.

Here are some facts.

They have no brains, heart, bones or eyes, and their mouth is in the centre of their body.

They are not fish, but invertebrates, meaning they do not have backbone.

They existed before dinosaurs and have been around for more than 500 million years.

The body of the jellyfish is made up of almost 94% of water.

The largest species of jellyfish, The Lion's Mane, has tentacles that can grow up to 120 feet which is longer than blue whale.

It has managed to survive for around 650 million years ago not only without a brain, but with no heart, and blood too.

Functions through a network of sensory nerves that talk to each other.

This helps their tentacles react to foreign objects with a shooting sting that releases a toxin capable of neutralising the intruder.

A group of jellyfish is called a "bloom", "swarm" or "smack"Some are edible.Jellyfish eat and poop out of the same orifice.

They're adapting well to climate change.

Some jellyfish might be immortal.

They rarely traveled in groups.

Some jellyfish can glow in the dark.

Jellyfish stings can be deadly.

They catch their prey with their tentacles and then bring the food to their mouth.

Most jellyfish are found in the ocean but some are also found in ponds and streams.

They are usually found and stay at the surface of the water but some go low as 3300 feet under the surface top

.A sea wasp which is found in the coast of Northern Australia.

If you get stung by a sea wasp you die within 15 minutes.

To stay alive jellyfish eat plankton, tiny plants and other animals that live near the surface of the water by using their tentacles.

They are not fast swimmers so it is hard to out swim their predators. However they can keep swimming for a long time without being tired and they let the waves take them.

If you touched a jellyfish's top it would be slimy, that's because they have a thing called mucus that they have all over them.
