Under the influence - Mar 6:14-29

Here’s a simplified explanation of Mark 6:14-29 from the Bible:

King Herod and John the Baptist (Verses 14-16):

King Herod hears about Jesus and his miracles. Some people think Jesus is John the Baptist raised from the dead, Elijah, or another prophet.

Herod believes John, whom he had previously beheaded, has been resurrected.

The Backstory (Verses 17-20):

Herod had arrested John and put him in prison because John had spoken against Herod's marriage to Herodias, his brother's wife. According to John, it was against God's law for Herod to marry her.

Herodias held a grudge against John and wanted to kill him, but she couldn't because Herod feared and protected John, recognizing him as a righteous and holy man.

Herod’s Birthday Banquet (Verses 21-25):

During Herod’s birthday banquet, Herodias's daughter (traditionally named Salome) dances and pleases Herod and his guests.

Herod, pleased with the dance, rashly promises her anything she wants, up to half his kingdom.

She consults with her mother, Herodias, who tells her to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

John the Baptist’s Execution (Verses 26-29):

Though distressed, Herod is bound by his oath and the presence of his guests.

He orders John to be beheaded in prison. The executioner delivers John’s head on a platter to the girl, who gives it to her mother.

John's disciples take his body and lay it in a tomb.

In essence, this passage tells the story of how John the Baptist was executed due to a combination of Herod’s impulsive promise and Herodias's vindictive desire. It's a narrative of power, manipulation, and tragic consequences.
