The power of prayer is real. Nothing is too large or too small for God to handle since He loves you and hears you. That does not imply that God is some kind of mechanical vending device. We ought to pray with assurance and complete submission to God and His good purposes.
If you define "prayer doesn't work" broadly enough, it might be true to say that it has no effect. If you believe that when you pray, God has to perform anything you ask of Him, you are seriously misguided. God is not a genie in a bottle who must grant your every wish. God is who He is. He is the Lord of All, and everything is in His plan. Your prayers may not always be answered the way you would like them to be. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't pray firmly. There is a "sweet spot" where you can be fully certain that God can and will grant your requests as well as perfectly obedient to His perfect will. Jesus provided an excellent illustration of this when He prayed and urged God to spare Him the agony of the crucifixion by saying, "not my will, but Yours, be done."
