I don't wear a tattoos, I used to, as little girl, but not through needle, but by painting. Let's explore what the Bible say about tattoos.
In the Old Testament specifically in Leviticus 19:28, it says, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.” This was part of a broader set of laws given to the Israelites, aimed at distinguishing them from surrounding cultures and maintaining ritual purity.
The New Testament doesn't explicitly mention tattoos, neither in a positive nor negative light. This is partly because the focus of the New Testament is on spiritual principles and inner transformation rather than ritual practices and external signs.
Many Christians today interpret the Old Testament laws in light of the New Testament's emphasis on grace and personal faith. As a result, views on tattoos vary widely among different Christian communities. Some see them as permissible forms of personal expression, while others may discourage them based on their interpretation of biblical teachings.
Some Christians interpret tattoos as potentially sinful, drawing on biblical teachings that emphasize treating the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. For instance, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies." This passage underscores the importance of caring for and respecting one's body.
Because of this, some Christians view tattoos, piercings, and other body modifications as potentially harmful or disrespectful to the body. However, it's important to note that interpretations of these teachings can vary widely. Many Christians believe that the intent and meaning behind the tattoo are what matter most. For them, tattoos can be a form of personal expression, a way to commemorate important life events, or even a testament to their faith.
New Testament, having tattoos does not disqualify someone from going to heaven as long as they have faith in Christ and strive to follow His teachings. It's ultimately the condition of one's heart and their faith in Jesus that matters most.
