Honour Your Ancestors

The Day of the Dead aligns with biblical teachings about honouring our ancestors without crossing into worship.

Honouring Ancestors: The Bible encourages respecting and remembering those who came before us. In Exodus 20:12, it says, "Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." This includes respecting their legacy and learning from their wisdom.

Not Worshipping: Worship is reserved for God alone. The Bible warns against idolizing anything or anyone. In Deuteronomy 6:13-14, it states, "Fear the Lord your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name. Do not follow other gods..."

Remembering with Gratitude: Hebrews 12:1 talks about being "surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses" and encourages us to run our race with perseverance, inspired by the faith and endurance of those before us.

Hope in Resurrection: The Bible teaches about the hope of resurrection. In John 11:25-26, Jesus says, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die." This hope comforts us as we remember our loved ones, trusting they are in God's care.

Legacy of Faith: Hebrews 11 is known as the "Faith Hall of Fame," recounting the stories of individuals who lived by faith. Remembering their stories inspires us to live faithfully and leave a legacy for future generations.

God's Faithfulness: Deuteronomy 7:9 reminds us, "Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments." This underscores the enduring nature of God's promises across generations.

Comfort in Grief: In Matthew 5:4, Jesus says, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." It's a reminder that God sees our pain and offers comfort in our sorrow.

By incorporating these lessons, the Day of the Dead becomes a time to honour our ancestors, remember God's promises, and find comfort in the hope of resurrection.
