Celebrating Diwali

Everyone knows that Diwali is a Hindu celebration. If you are a Christian, you are probably thinking about what celebrating Diwali has to do with us Christians. Diwali means Festival of Light. As Christians, we are encouraged to celebrate the Light that overcomes the darkness.

Here are some meaningful ways Christians can celebrate Diwali in a gospel-centered way:

1. Focus on the Light of Jesus

Reflect the light of Jesus during Diwali by emphasizing His role as the Light of the World. Use Diwali decorations to share Bible verses that highlight this theme, such as:

John 8:12: "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."

John 12:46: "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness."

2. Host a Community Event

Organize a community event where you can share the gospel and celebrate with friends and neighbors. This could include a special service, a Diwali-themed church gathering, or an outdoor celebration with lanterns, lights, and food.

3. Acts of Kindness and Service

Embody the teachings of Jesus by using this time to serve others. Volunteer at a local charity, visit a nursing home, or organize a food drive. Acts of kindness can be a powerful way to share God’s love with others.

4. Prayer and Worship

Incorporate times of prayer and worship into your Diwali celebrations. Gather with family and friends to pray, sing worship songs, and read Scriptures that focus on God's light and love.

5. Share the Story of Jesus

Take the opportunity to share the story of Jesus with others. This can be through conversations, performances, or creative expressions like art and music that tell of His life and message.

6. Create and Share Gospel-Themed Crafts

Engage children and families in creating crafts that combine the Diwali theme with gospel messages. For example, make lanterns with Bible verses or create artwork depicting Jesus as the light of the world.

7. Reflect on Spiritual Significance

Take time to reflect on the spiritual significance of light and darkness in your life. Use Diwali as an opportunity to evaluate how you can better live out your faith and let the light of Jesus shine through you.

8. Celebrate with Food and Fellowship

Food often brings people together. Prepare a meal for your family, friends, or community that incorporates both traditional Diwali foods and your personal touches. Use the meal as a time to share the gospel and enjoy fellowship.

By incorporating these elements, Christians can celebrate Diwali in a way that aligns with their faith and shares the message of Jesus.
